The most dishonest thing I have ever done was stealing some longan, a kind of fruit produced abundantly in summer, from my neighbors’ back yard. In my childhood, I lived with my grandparents in country, while my parents were getting jobs in Taipei. And my grandparents trusted me and let me do whatever I want to do. The thing was happened in my second year of elementary school, when I was in my summer vacation. I remembered the weather was boiling hot, my grandparents went out and chatted with their friends, leaving some children, of course including me, alone at home. All of us felt hot and gradually could not endure it. That is to say, we had to find something interesting to transfer our feeling about heat. Then we noticed that the longan tree cultivated by our neighbors grew well. The longan looked juicy and delicious, and there was no fence. So, we made a plan about stealing longan, driving our bicycle, taking some bags and began to carry out. First of all, some of my cousins posted as a lookout. Then the taller children, especially me, climbed up the bicycle, and took of the fruit. We did not stop until our bags were filled with the fruit. Finally we finished getting longan, and we soon ate all of the fruit. To make matters worse, we threw away all the shell, and went home happily.
When my grandparents went back home, of course our neighbors were angry at my grandparents. They asked them why they let us alone and told them the bad thing we have done. My grandparents felt embarrassed and sent some apple to our neighbor. After sending apple, my grandmother called me. I thought she would be very angry and never forgive me. However, she was not angry at all, all of she did was only ask me if I wanted to eat longan, why not told her. Even though my grandparents were not angry, my tear was dropped. And I could not help but keep crying, because I felt that I betrayed my grandparents’ trust. After this experience, I told myself that I will never do any dishonest thing, because I did not want to make my grandparents’ trust in vain.

Good story. The way your grandparents dealt with it was much more effective than if they had simply hit you, wasn't it?
ReplyDeleteYes, if they only hit me, I would not be so embarrassed. That is, it was their attitude that made me do not want to do this kind of thing anymore.
