I read the news about Michael Jackson’s movie “This Is It”. In the paragraph, I found a word that I really didn’t know what it means. That word was “premiere”. If I search the word from Yahoo dictionary, I could only get the Chinese meaning. However, when I used the websites that the teacher gave us, I found it was really interesting to understand the word from other ways.
In so many websites, I like http://www.thesaurus.com/ the most. It not only gives me the meaning, but also gives me some synonyms to help me better understand the word. For instance, I search the word “premiere”; it gives me the definition which says the original production. In addition, it also gives me the synonyms, such as first performance, opening night. Despite the fact that I don’t know the exact meaning of premiere, yet from those synonyms, I am able to roughly guess what it means.
I think it’s really useful to have so many methods to learn English and I will add these websites to My Favorite.

What it really means, as I think you've figured out, is the first time a film or performance is seen. It is also sometimes called the "opening night".
ReplyDeleteIt's a French word (meaning 'first') and should really be spelt 'première'. 'Premier' is used to mean 'prime minister', or, in Taiwan, the head of the Executive Yuan.
