Quite a few people have registered for the blog, but so far nobody except me has posted. Don't forget that the homework task is to write your own blog entry and post it!
Last week we organized permanent groups for class discussion, trying to make sure there was a good mix of male and female students in the groups. If you're not happy with your group membership for any reason, do let me know privately. I will probably change the groups around again in the second semester.
I hope that you found the Peter Hull tasks last week interesting and worthwhile. My idea was to do some discussion and comprehension tasks around the reading, and then use an assessed format—a writing task—to see how you could creatively use the knowledge you had gained from those activities. I also wanted you to get more practice with basic email writing. Correct formatting (including greetings, spacing and capitalization) are very important in email correspondence, and I want everyone to understand that.
I will probably ask you to do a writing task of this sort once every two or three weeks. Don't get anxious about this, though: they only count for a fairly small proportion of the overall grade. Also, I have to admit that the activity was a little too rushed; perhaps I need to plan the timing for written work a little better in future :P
This week, we will probably finish the Advertising chapter in I&I, and if there is time I will ask the groups to prepare their own radio or TV advert. This will be an opportunity for you to get creative!
The following week's class will be in the computer lab. More on that later!
